Abstract:

Financial linkages are increasingly being perceived as a panacea to the problem of lack of access to formal financial services in rural areas of Sri Lanka.
A research was conducted to establish the factors influencing the linkages between formal and informal financial institutions in Sri Lanka.
The results of the research highlight the existence of and the motivation behind the initial creation of the linkages, contracting mechanics and their effectiveness in dealing with risks, services provided in the linkages, linkage outcomes at client and institutional levels, and challenges faced by institutions in Sri Lanka in sustaining the linkages.
